What are the advantages of Open XML formats?

Open XML Formats include many benefits, not only for developers and solutions built for them, but for individuals or organizations of any size:

Compact files are automatically compressed and can be up to 75 per cent smaller in some cases. Open XML Formats uses zip compression technology to store documents, offering cost savings by reducing the disk space required to store files and reducing the bandwidth required to send files by e-mail and Internet networks. When you open a file, it is automatically extracted. When you save a file, it is automatically zipped again. No need to install separate unzips utility to open and close files in Office 2010. Improved file recovery damaged files are modular, maintaining various components separated data file. This allows open files, even if a part of file (e.g. a chart or table) is damaged.
