Windows 8 Changes Updates System

As you might know, Windows 8, the new operating system from Microsoft will be released next year. The company has stated that the new operating system will be able to run on only 300MB of memory, thus making it the least demanding operating system on the market.

Recently, Microsoft has also stated that the new operating system will no longer bother the users with update messages which usually ask them to restart their computers. A company official has stated that those messages will occur less often than with Windows 7. Farzana Rahman, a group program manager for Windows Update, said that the updates will no longer be annoying for the users. He said that the biggest challenge they had to face was to create a way of obtaining these updates very fast and without asking the users to restart the PC too often.

Windows 7, which is the current operating system from Microsoft, offers the users numerous options when it comes to updating their system. Users can choose for the updates to be installed automatically, they can choose to be announced when an update will be available, and they can choose to receive a notification before the installation occurs. The users, who choose the updates to be installed automatically, can either choose for them to be installed as soon as they are available, or at certain times. Windows 8 will have all of these features, but with a certain difference.

Now, the users will be asked to restart their PCs, on the second Tuesday of each month, or the Patch Tuesday, as they call it. This means that the users will no longer be prompted with restart messages, but they will have to do it only once every month. Rahman said that even if new and important updates will be released before Patch Tuesday, the user will not be prompted to restart the PC. However, they will be asked for a restart, if the update is very important, such as protecting the computer against a recent virus, or something similar. With Windows 7, a pop-up appears when an update is available, and that is not very pleasant, especially if the pop-up occur during a video game, a movie, a presentation, and so on.

The pop-up will be eliminated from Windows 8. Instead of the pop-up, the users will be notified about an update through a log-in screen. In case the users chose the updates to be installed automatically, the message will be displayed for three days. If they did not restart the computer in three days, the restart will be automatic.
