What is Key Management Services?

By default, KMS client key has been installed in volume editions of Microsoft Office 2010 programs. Computers running volume editions of Microsoft Office 2010 client using a KMS key and KMS are called clients connect to the KMS host organization to request activation. Needs no user action and does not need to enter a product key for KMS clients. The system administrator must activate the KMS host with Microsoft and configure the KMS host. Also, the KMS client can be configured for varying time periods of reactivation and renewal.

If a customer fails to activate KMS, end user will see a notification dialog to 25 days after installing Microsoft Office 2010. If a KMS client was absent from the network for more than 180 days after successful activation, the user will see the notification for a product without a license and a red title bar when you start Microsoft Office 2010. However, no loss in functionality, even if the KMS client licenses can not be renewed. After successful activation, users no longer receive notifications.

Microsoft Office 2010 KMS clients to enable connecting to a KMS host based on a client-server topology. KMS clients can locate hosts by DNS protocol or by setting the KMS host name in the registry. Customers contact KMS host using RPC calls. The activation process is invisible to the end user and requires no interaction.
