You all know that SEO is very important when you want to be successful. And what does SEO means in the end? It means a good optimization of the content and of the keywords inside the tags and inside the posts that you publish on your blog.
Let’s see where you can place the keywords and what will be the benefits brought by them if you place them in that location, rather that in the other location. You can start by adding keywords in your title tag, you know that tag which is inserted into the head tag. This tag has to contain a lot of keywords, but in the same time, not that many because you might get penalised by the search engines that index your site.
The words written in the title tag will be shown by the list which contains the search results. In this way, you will have more chance to appear in a list after certain words that are searched for. The title has to be short, you don’t want to bother your readers or the ones that look for some words online with your endless phrases and expressions. The maximum number of words in the title tag should be around 7.
Also, the keywords are very important in the URL that your site has. For example, if you have a site called “redpencils”, you might appear in the first search results when people search after the words “red” and “pencils”. This is only an example. I don’t know if that site exists. I just made it up to provide a clear example. I don’t know who might search for these words online. I took them so different, just to make a statement here. In my opinion, selecting the right words into the URL of your site is even more important than setting the words in the title tag. It has also a shortcoming. In the URL, you cannot use 7 keywords, like you can do in the title tag, and the words will not be separate by a comma, but by an underline, or perhaps the words will be connected one to each other. In this situation, you lower the chances for someone to find your site if you use the words “red” and “pencils” and if that person only looks for the word “pencils”.
You have the first word connected to each other and you can say that you have formed a new word. The Internet doesn’t know that you say there in fact “red pencils” instead of “redpencils”. The crawlers and the bots take the word exactly as you write it. If you write “red.pencils” or “red_pencils”, you can increase the chances for your site to be found by that person who is searching for the word “pencils”, but this is not always a guarantee. If you use the underline in your URL, you have to use also other method of optimization and not count only on that, because when you do this, be sure that your site is going to appear somewhere in the middle of the search results or even among the last results.
Also, the keywords that are used in the title or in the URL have to be used in other parts of your content. And to make sure that you have a well-optimized site, it would be preferable if you use the exact words that you have in the URL or in the title tag inside the content on your site. For example, you write about news and the title of the site is using already the word “news” like normally. You must use the same word in the content of your posts, not on every post, but it would be good to write it once in a while. And when you do this, make sure to do it at the beginning of the posts, because this is the part that is seen in the article directories, where your blog or your post might be indexed and presented to a larger audience.
When you place keywords in your content, you have to be careful, because as I said before if you use too many of them, the search engines could realise that you only want to attract visitors instead of writing a good and useful content for them. You have to mainly write for the humans and only after that for the search engines. This is why you have to write an article and only after that to write some tags at the end of the article. When you write those tags, you in fact write some keywords. Think of what words you would use to reach to an article like the one you have just written. When you answer to this question, you will be able to write some appropriate tags.
When you link towards another sites, it is recommended to link to sites that speak about the same things as you do. Don’t link to sites that speak about potatoes and you speak about iPhone 4. I know it is very good to link to sites that explain a certain word or give more information about a word. For example, in the phrase above I could link the word “iPhone 4” to Wikipedia, because I don’t want to write an article about iPhone 4 here and still I want you to know what this phone is all about. Or I could link directly to the Apple site, from where you can get the official information about this product.
So, no one says that you must not do this. Just when you write about a certain topic, it is good to link to sites that have in their own URLs or in their own title tags words that are very similar to yours. And right now, you can ask: Ok, but this doesn’t mean that I am advertising for my competitors? This could sound you are advertising for the, you are right, but as long as you link to them, they will know, if they will ever find out, that you feel that is enough room for everybody in that online segment and it will be a sort of method of showing the other person that you trust in what he writes and you even recommend him to your own readers. Of course, if you sell computers, you cannot link to another computer manufacturer, because this will be inethical, but when it comes to providing more information to your readers from other sources as well, why not do this? They will thank you for doing this.
Let’s say you write about honey, you write also about bees, but you cannot cover all this field, and you place a link on your site to another site that talks about honey, site that doesn’t belong to you, nor to any of your friends. It is a simple site where you found good information about this product, so why not link to that site? And let me tell you something. The more links you provide to other sites, the more your value as a site grows, so insert links and don’t forget to optimise the content.
