Korean Government Sites Hacked

South Korea lately confronted with cyber attacks that were targeted towards the government and governmental agencies’ Websites. The news came out this morning, being presented by Bloomberg, who also says that 40 Websites were targeted at 10 a.m., the local time. The attack was named “the distributed denial of service”. According to Ahnlab Inc., the South Korea’s largest antivirus producer, more incidents are expected to come at 6.30 p.m.

The Korean government is not at its first alert against the cyber attacks and now they have released a new warning and they are monitoring with all the security that they can use the main Websites, bossting the protection of them. This mention came from the Korea Communications Commission. In July 2009, there were reported other attacks which came from the North Korea’s postal ministry.

The codes that are written in those malicious software programs aim to trigger a massive attack, since the computers are connected one to each other. The Websites that were infected today included the Presidential Website and office, the foreign ministry, the defense and national assembly and also the US military data, military force which is located in Seoul. The National Intelligence Service was also targeted, so that those who did this to show the Koreans that they can attack this service as well.

Ahnlab says that now they are distributing free software to eliminate the threat, to diagnose and remove the codes. It would be preferable to stop the incoming attacks also, so a software for protecting the Websites would be more than welcomed. You can imagine that the sites were protected somehow. You cannot leave a site unprotected when the site offers extremely valuable information. And also the datacenters that the Koreans have had to be protected as well. This shows once again how dangerous the cyber attacks are and how important is for the software manufacturers to think ahead of their attackers.

Last year, only 17 South Korean Websites, were targeted, according to ABC News. It seems that the attackers started the year in force, wanting to demonstrate that they can take control over the South Korean information system. More information about this case later this evening. We expect to see if there will be more attacks and if the South Koreans are ready for them. When a news will be released, we will present it to you. Stay connected!
