It seems that people are very passionate about their phones, especially since the development of the smart phones. They can spend hours with their faces buried in the screens of these devices without getting bored, downloading everything they can. There are many applications which can be downloaded, some really great, others really useless.

One of the most recent applications which has gathered the attention of the media through the numbers of downloads it has achieved is the I’m Getting Arrested application. The application is available on Android based phones and it is free. This application allows you to write a message, select the persons you want to deliver this message to, such as close ones, or even your lawyer, and with the press of a button it will send the message to those people. Jason Van Anden is the creator of the application, and he stated that he created it after one of his friends nearly got arrested when he was at a demonstration. Since it was released, the application was downloaded more than 10,000 times, and it is uncertain why. Are so many people afraid that they will get arrested, or is it the simplicity of sending a mass message that attracted the people?

It is very easy to write the message and to add the people you would like to send the message to. However, as some have stated, the application can be useless, as it does not track the location of the phone, and it does not connect to Facebook or Twitter. Some people said that the possibility of removing your phone from your pocket and pressing a button while you are arrested is very low, so that makes the application even more improbable to work. Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, stated that many people who have smartphone and who are very passionate about them consider these devices as a mean of protection. They are constantly online, and thus they can communicate on a constant basis.

It seems that many people who have downloaded the application, did it because they consider it a way of showing your support against the oppressors, which in the majority of the cases, at a demonstration, is represented by the police.
