Google Docs Viewer Update

Google Docs Viewer recently was updated and now it offers support for 12 more type of files. With it, you were able to view Microsoft Word documents, Power Point documents, PDFs, but now you will be able to see more features of this program. You can embed this program in any Website, just like you can do with a game, you can launch it directly from your Google Mail and obviously from the Google Docs application.

As the news was reported by Mashable, when they saw the Google Docs Blog release, the 12 new file types that will be available to be seen with Google Docs Viewer are the next ones: Apple Pages (the files having the extension .pages), Microsoft Power Point, the files having the extension .pptx (until now, only the files with .ppt and .pps were supported by the application), Microsoft Excel (the files ending in .xls and .xlsx), Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, AutoCad, PostScript, TrueType, Scalable Vector Graphics, XML Paper Specification.

Mashable does a great job when saying that you cannot create documents in this formats using this application. Because some of the people reading this might think that. No, you will be using this application only to see the files ending in those extension. To create a photo and to edit it, you will still need Photoshop. You cannot create a photo or a text, using the Google Docs program, because it will not work.

You can try to see if this works for yourself. The easiest test you can perform is to create a simple Excel file and to send the file to your e-mail that you have from Google. Wait for the Google Docs Viewer application to start functioning and see if the document you wrote few minutes ago is seen in the Google Docs Viewer like you see it on your computer, when you simply open the file, using the Microsoft Excel program.

The file should be rendered just like the original program would render it. With files coming from Microsoft, especially files which work with texts, Google Docs Viewer will pass the test more easily. But the more difficult test is with the photos. So, create a simple photo with Adobe Photoshop and send it to your e-mail. Then open the Gmail account and click on the file you just received. See how the colors appear in the file you opened from your e-mail address. Do they look ok? A report on Mashable also says that the application works just great when it comes to rendering the colors of the photos, so if the application passed the photo test, then it is ok to be used, because mainly the programs that you use are Word and Excel. Although the Adobe programs must not be forgotten. We cannot say from this point what will be the other file types that will be included in the Google Docs Viewer. All we know is that they move pretty fast and a possible update might be already on its way.
