Kratos is back and ready to finish up his quest for revenge. God of War 3 picks up right where God of War 2 left off, Kratos is riding up the tops of mount Olympus to kill the rest of the gods and complete his revenge.
Players will once again take control of Kratos in his quest for vengeance and this time around, things have been rebuild from the ground up. The game has a whole boat load of new things in it, but one of the biggest things is the game’s engine, which allows all kinds of enhancements in the game. From the levels themselves, to the characters, the weapons, and the abilities, everything in GoW3 is bigger and better than any of the previous installments. All of this and the amazingly strong story are the 2 best things GoW3 has going for. Some levels will have you playing on the arm of a titan and that is literally a moment where as a player, you have to take a second to really take in the entire scope that is going on.
The gameplay itself hasn’t been reworked as much, as it has been slightly tweaked, if players want to button mash through the game, then by all means they can do that, but now things are a bit more refined with the edition of 4 new weapons, each with their own unique abilities and unique magical abilities. The game has some of the most rewarding combat ever experienced in a title like God of War. With 4 different weapons at player’s disposal and the ability to hot swap between them in combat, the combat itself has definitely been taking up a step. Another great element of the game that has return to the series in full force, are the puzzles. GoW3 offers up some pretty interesting and sometimes frustrating puzzles this time around. It’s nice to have the developers making the players use their heads for a bit and it’s really a great payoff when you complete a puzzle in the game.
This engine makes the game looks so good, that most of the story telling is done using the in game models. There is no need for pre run cut scenes, even though there are a few, the game just looks amazing all the time. From the characters to the level design, the development team from Sony Santa Monica really took the time to get everything in the game a huge amount of detail.
The controls in GoW3 haven’t changed much since the last game, everything is familiar and easy to use. The control will take some time to master, as now you have the ability to change weapons in combat and that can lead to some devastating combos. The only thing that takes a while longer to get used to is the double jump mechanic, but it’s just this little thing that draws back the game for a small bit. Overall, the controls are a pleasure to learn and fell extremely familiar to gamers who have played the previous game in the series. Another amazing aspect of GoW3 is the sound. Everything in the sound department fits perfectly within the game. The soundtrack and score would be the definition of the word epic and the voice acting is once again spot on.
GoW3 is the hands down the best in it’s series so far, everything being bigger and better with amazing visual effects and it’s sure is a stepping stone for the future titles in this particular genre.
