Today I thought to create a new list with gadgets that can be offered to your friends or gadgets that you can ask to your friends, when it is your birthday. Don’t laugh: these toys are so great, and you will want to take them home.
For example, the thirsty bird is a gadget that is based on thermodynamic principles for functioning. The exact same laws that set in motion a heat engine helps the bird to move a long time without batteries or other means, making it a perpetual motion machine, well, almost, until the water ends. The first step is to fill a glass of water then soak the bird’s beak for a few seconds. Let it loose and it will start to oscillate after a few seconds to get its beak into the water again. The explanation is found in the textbooks of physics: when water evaporates from the material through the glass, the temperature drops and causes the inner vapors to condense and fall into the tank. Because of the condensation, a decrease in the vapors pressure will eventually appear, making the bird to rise again. Another glass of water will offer the same behavious as before and so on. Let the water run.
