Few Writing Tips

An online journalist or blogger or a person that writes for a printed newspaper or magazine has to follow certain rules, if he or she wants to stay in this business for a long time. One of the main rules in writing is to never write long posts. I have seen articles in the printed newspapers I read which have 3000 words. Yes, there are some photos there (obviously no videos), but still there are 3000 words. If I see that many words, I am not attracted to read that article, even if it speaks about my favorite actress or actor.

If the article is divided into several ones, smaller, having maximum 1000 words, the articles will attract more people. I guess you know the sensation when you have a printed newspaper in your hands and go to the middle of the newspaper and see a very large article, having more than 2000 words. Recently, I read an article (I don’t know how this happened, because it was about the military equipments in a certain region of this world, thus a subject which is not among my favorites), which had 2010 words. In fact, what attracted me to read that article was its title: “The year of 2010 in 2010 words”.

A good title, which attracts readers, that’s for sure, but still I would not write an article that contains 2010 words. First of all, at the end of the article you will be limited by the thought that you have to write 2010 words. And what happens if I want to express something and I need one more word? Or I don’t need three words that will help me to get to the target. In this situation, you will start to add some words or cut others, to obtain the imposed target. This is not very good, and in my opinion is stressful.

It is better to write an article and when you finish what you have to transmit, you move to the next article that you have to write in that day. But obviously the authot of the article wanted to attract the readers by using that title. I did not count the words that were in the article, but I am sure that there were 2010, just like the author said. This eventually turned out to be a good technique to attract the visitors, but I don’t recommend it, unless you use it in the online media, where the readers can switch the pages. So, they will not have to scroll forever to see the article, but they will have to press an arrow that emphasizes that the text is continued on another page. In this way, you can publisgh about 700 words per page, without annoying too much the reader.

It is useless to say that you have to insert photos and videos to make the content more readable. And one more thing: don’t use text blocks, because this is a reason for which the books are not that loved by the readers. Use short paragraphs and words that everybody understands.
