Today is definitely the day of newspapers. I read this morning about the early days of the press and now here I am writing articles about newspapers for the last three hours or so.
I discovered some facts that I hope you will enjoy. The first English newspaper appeared in 1621. Its name was Corante and appeared weekly. The first daily newspaper was named “The Daily Courant” and appeared in 1702. That is a long journey from 1702 to where the press is today. “The Oxford Gazette” had the longest life of a newspaper. It was first published in 1665.
At the beginning of the press, all the newspapers wrote the news, without making any comments. In 1704, the first editorials were published. “The Daily Advertiser” was the first newspaper which included paid advertisments. Most like Google, I might say. Although, it was not a search engine.
The first American newspaper is “Public Occurrences”. It was published in Boston on September 25, 1690. The newspaper was suppresed after its very first issue.
There are newspapers like “The Wall Street Journal”, “The New York Times” and “The Washington Post” which broke the barriers of the written press and now have thousands of readers thanks to this online environment. This number is added to those few million which normally read those newspapers.
