Nero became almost a synonym for burning CDs, DVDs and lately of BDs (Blu-ray disks). We talk about Nero, the software for burning data on the above mentioned disks, not about the famous Roman emperor. Meanwhile, Nero evolved and reached version 10 and became capable of doing a lot of stuff.
Nero is actually a collection of applications that can be separately launched, with the help of a soft menu called Nero StartSmart, and the most popular of these applications is Nero Burning ROM, the program for burning optical disks. Nero Burning ROM is the heart of the whole software collection and has a lot of options and variables created for advanced users. As a regular user of Nero, you will probably not have to know all about the capabilities of Burning ROM.
For such users there is Nero Express, a more friendly application in which you simply choose the action to be made (copy a movie, burn a music CD/DVD, etc.) and the type of optical disk, choose the files and the speed with which you want to burn them and that’s it, wait for Nero to complete the process.
A few people know that Nero has also an application for simulating a virtual disk, application called Nero ImageDrive. In essence it, the software behaves just like Daemon Tools, which I presented to you a few days ago.
Perhaps you have a lot of recorded CDs or DVDs with favorite movies or TV shows or recorded with a video camera. Instead of searching through them for finding the one you want, or writing with the marker on the disks, which is pretty rough, you can use Nero CoverDesigner. It’s an application with which you can create your own covers for CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray. Simply choose some images you want and you can process them “on the spot” as if you were in Photoshop. Add writing, special effects, and everything you want.
If you have installed Windows Vista and you have Nero 10, you don’t even have to start the program to burn disks. Nero DiscCopy Gadget is an application that helps you make simple operations even from the sidebar. Nero 10 is a much more interesting application. Nero RescueAgent is a software capable of recovering data from damaged disks or disks that can’t be read and recover deleted data by mistake. Frankly, I did not have the chance to test the application, but if you did, feel free to share with us if it is good or not. Anyway, it seems pretty interesting considering that data recovery software is pretty expensive.
In Nero 10 there is another package called InCD which allows you to use CDs as you once used floppy disks. In other words, you can write and delete from the rewritable disks (CD-RW, DVD-RW, etc) when you are in Windows Explorer with drag & drop, without having to start Nero.
As I said in the beginning, Nero learned other things besides burning. It has an audio – video player, Nero ShowTime, with which you can play a lot of different formats, and even a media center application that is good at TV reception (this if you have a compatible graphics card with TV reception) – Nero Live.
That’s not all. Nero 10 is good at processing and mixing video clips with Nero Vision, it knows how to process audio files with Nero Wave Editor and has a photo – processing software: Nero PhotoSnap.
