Inkscape is an open source vector graphics editor similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, which uses the W3C standard, in Scalable Vector Graphics format (SVG).
For those who do not know, “Vector graphics” is a process by which images are constructed using mathematical descriptions that determine the position, length and direction of the lines used in drawing. Bitmap images are complementary to vector images from raster graphics, where images are represented as an array of pixels.
Inkscape supports many SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc…) and the interface is as simple as possible. This application has all the functions mentioned in the first paragraph of commercial applications, but can be successfully used for web design, diagrams, icons, artistic creations, logos, maps. Many graphics on Wikipedia are achieving with Inkscape.
Once you’ll start using Inkscape, you’ll see it’s a good choice. You’ll like very much the manner of working with multiple layers, the control’s blur and opacity for each object, multiple color palettes, effects and simple interface. Also, you should take into account the fact that it is open source and doesn’t eat too many resources (CPU <25%>).
