Dell Streak gets proper introduction

It just takes one innovative company to release a certain product on the market for all other manufacturers to start creating the same type of product , assuming they’re already sure that type of product is successful. We’ve seen this after the iPhone was released. We’ve also seen this after the Eee PC was released. We can now notice how the market is completely saturated with netbooks. We’re going to see this again because of the iPad. In fact, Dell has today announced the launch of its own tablet, the Streak. Somewhat smaller than the iPad and including a 5-inch display the Streak is interesting nonetheless.

According to the US manufacturer, the carbon black Android-based tablet was designed to provide an excellent on-the-go entertainment, social connection and navigation experience. It comes with built-in WiFI, Bluetooth, 3G and equips a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1 Ghz processor, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, dual LED flash, UMTS/GPRS/EDGE class 12 GSM radio and a MicroSD memory card slot offering a maximum capacity of 32GB. The 2GB of internal storage should do quite nicely at least for storing photos.

The features of the Streak are also interesting to say the least. Google Maps are integrated and offer turn-by turn navigation, street and satellite views. Since this year is all about social networking as many research companies were eager to point out, the Streak has Twitter, Facebook and YouTube applications integrated. No more missing Tweets because you’re not at your home computer.

“The Dell Streak has found a way to fit your whole world in a 5-inch screen. Its unique size will help people discover new ways to enjoy the web, connect with friends, and navigate their lives.”

Dell seems to focus on students and mobile professionals a lot, with its laptop products as well as the Steak which apparently was designed to suit the needs of the two mentioned types of users quite well. The 5-inch screen the device features should be comfortable enough for a pleasant web browsing experience. Since the Streak is also decently small, you’ll have no trouble at all in carrying it wherever you go. Since the company didn’t bother to mention anything about the operating system, other than the fact that the device is running Android, we’d be willing to assume that it’s going to have 1.6 onboard.

Dell has announced that the Streak will start selling this Friday. It can be had either with a two-year contract through mobile carrier AT&T, in which case it will have a price tag $299.99, or free of any obligations but for a considerably higher price of $540.00. Those of you who are preoccupied by environment issues will be pleased to know that this device is packaged with cushions made from 100 percent sustainable, compostable bamboo. This is because all of the computer manufacturers are going greener nowadays.

  1. Nice smart phone, but is it better than the iPhone? The price sure seems to be spicier if this device really costs $540. Anyway, Dell is already famous for making these really cool devices so I’m pretty sure that the Dell Streak is going to be a smashing success as well.

  2. Well, the Streak is more of a tablet device than a smartphone. At least that’s what Dell is trying to promote it as, hence the hefty price. So if you wish, you could think of it as a smaller iPad with phone capabilities, or a bigger iPhone. Whichever you prefer :) But yes, the Streak seems promising and might become very popular.
