Bing records largest growth of all search engines

Google may be the leader of search engines, by far, but Microsoft isn’t doing so badly with Bing lately. According to market research company comScore, Bing has had the largest growth of all search engines in June 2010. While Google obviously remains the top search engine, it has lost a bit of ground during the past month.  In June, Google had a market share of 62.6 percent which is slightly lower than the percentage recorded in May, of 63.7.

Yahoo on the other hand, managed to increase its market share by 0.6 percent, from 18.3 to 18.9. The largest growth was recorded by Bing, which started out with 12.7 and recorded 12.7 according to the research. As for the number of searches that happened across all search engines, it was up with 3 percent in June, compared to the month before. Google had a 1 percent increase in volume; Yahoo grew by 7 percent whereas Bing recorded an 8 percent increase, the highest growth among search engines for the previous month.

Microsoft has admitted that there will be a long road ahead for Bing. But ever since its release in June 2009, Bing is now close to overtaking Yahoo. Obviously the company didn’t start from scratch with Bing, since it was actually a rebrand from the older Windows Live.  Microsoft has created Bing to appeal to the consumer. The search engine was designed to concentrate on travel, news, weather or shopping. Maps were also included. So what else is helping Bing in gaining more popularity? Well, first off, many new computers come with Bing installed on the toolbar as the main search engine. I guess this is what you can do when you sell more than half the world operating systems. ON top of the Bing application is also available for the iPHone and iPod touch. Windows Mobile phones were already Bing-ed, as one might expect. As mobile phones become a bigger part of our lives and larger screens allow for some fast info searching in a coffee break or at the bus station, developing well on all mobile phone platforms could further increase the popularity of a search engine, even if that search engine is far behind Google at the moment.
