Asus G73 laptop was a monster and we know that many of you share the same opinion. Still, it was impressive especially regarding its performance, appearance, size and weight. The price already doesn’t matter when you want to fight on an equal footing with such an exclusive manufacturer as Alienware. Now, it’s time to talk more broadly about its younger brother, Asus G53J, a laptop that could satisfy even the most demanding gaming enthusiast.
As always, we’ll start talking about G53J construction. If you’re passionate about philosophy and literature, probably Asus G53J look won’t impress you. Massive, with mate black plastic case, gentle when touching, quality bonded, the laptop tells you where is positioned in to whom it is addressed. Like the model of 17.3 “, the device is significantly thicker in the back when it is closed. There is the CPU and video card, each connected to a cooling system that eliminates the warm air through the two back slits. In these conditions, we do not recommend anyone to keep this laptop on a textile surface as the cooling system pulls the air through the slots located somewhere under some rest pad. The battery was located somewhere between the two slots behind Asus G53 and looks pretty compact for its capacity. Most connectors are on the right side, on the opposite side being situated the Blu-ray optical drive and two USB 2.0 ports. On the front side, we have four LED and the card reader. Closed, Asus G53J has a design inspired by stealth jets with angular forms. Viewed from behind, someone might notice a resemblance to Asus VX7 and VX6 fireballs. The bright colors and shiny plastics were not taken into account in casing construction. Even ROG logo on the lid of the screen is not colored.
If you want to go out walking with Asus G53J, prepare to go along with an impressive power supply that weighs about 1 kilo. Also, you could go with Nvidia 3D Vision glasses included in the package. You don’t need a sync mode for them because over the screen, next to the webcam is an infrared emitter. Chiclet illuminated keyboard is identical to that of G73. The touchpad has separated buttons and a decent behavior when used for navigating the operating system. The only thing less enjoyable regarding its construction is the power connector location. Initially, you’ll think that it will not disturb its location closer to the center right side. In practice, using a mouse near Asus G53J might be uncomfortable. The power cord, otherwise quite thick, has a magnetic filter very close to plug and requires a free zone of 7-8 cm wide near the laptop. Even so, the mouse will not stay too far away from the keyboard, and many users might not be affected at all.
Now it’s time for some techinical specifications regarding Asus G53J: display–15.6 “, 1366×768, Glare, 120 Hz; processor– Intel Core i7-720QM, 1.6 GHz, 2.8 GHz Turbo, 6 MB of Smart Cache, 45W TDP; chipset– Intel Express HM55; RAM– 4 x 2 GB DDR3, 1333 MHz; GPU– NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M, 1.5 GB RAM; HDD– 2 x 750 GB, 7200 RPM, 16 MB buffer, SATA 3GB / s Seagate; optical drive–Blu-ray Writer LG; network– LAN, 802.11b/g/n, WiMAX, Bluetooth; connectors–3 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, 2 x audio; others– card reader, webcam, NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses; battery– 8 cell, 5200 mAh, 63 Wh, dimensions–391 x 297 x 20-50 mm and weight– 3.6 kilos.
Regarding its impressive features, for the sample, the Taiwanese manufacturer used the best components. Compared with Asus G73, the present model has the same processor, same amount of RAM and a video card with similar performance. G53′s advantage, so to speak, is that the screen resolution helps to obtain good performance in games. According to information from the official site, the most powerful processor that can be fitted to Asus G53J is Intel Core i7-820QM to 1.73 GHz. Maximum RAM supported is 12 GB, a huge amount that can be considered unnecessary at present. Perhaps some readers have already noticed that the laptop is equipped with a WiMAX modem. The video card market is the most powerful for portable from Nvidia nowadays. Nvidia GeForce GTX 480M will be also released in future. Screen frequency of 120 Hz is not a novelty. We met it also on Asus G51 3D. In this case, it integrates synchronization module for the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses. They are supplied in the package for the models compatible with the display. The storage capacity of Asus G53 is impressive, but to squeeze everything out of such a system we recommend installing a SDD instead of HDD. As we shall see, the battery is not weak, but when it comes to games, it becomes almost decorative.
Perhaps you’ve wondered why we aren’t talking about Nvidia Optimus on Asus G53. The processor has not an integrated video card, also the chipset can not boast with it and the image displaying on the screen is dedicated to Nvidia GTX 460M card. This will be important when we’ll talk about autonomy. Another thing that we can mention is that the lack of overclocking for processor and motherboard from Power4Gear options. Perhaps the manufacturer hasn’t considered it necessary for this configuration. Regarding its performance in games, games such CoD: Modern Warfare 2, FarCry 2 and NFS Shift will run fine on 1366×768 resolution with maximum graphics settings. Those who have tested the Nvidia 3D Vision, know that the games have a certain degree of compatibility with this technology. Exceptions are some very fresh titles that have native support. None of the titles mentioned above fall into this category. For the best possible viewing experience, NVIDIA recommends to disable some graphic effects for each game. Under these conditions, the number of frames per second recorded will increase for each title. All the games will run great on Asus G53J with 3D Vision glasses enabled.
Now, we should stop in keeping you guessing about G53J autonomy. The claims in this field should be lower because Asus G53J is more a home gaming laptop than a bag laptop. We noted above that the single video card in system is the performant one from Nvidia, so that the autonomy has suffered. Using the wireless network, editing documents, listening music using headphones, with Power4Gear Quiet Office profile system, screen brightness at 50%, the autonomy will be an hour and 35 minutes. If you’ll be on the train or plane, but you won’t have an outlet, you should expect to an autonomy of maximum 35 minutes.
The backlit keyboard is great for night gaming sessions. Lighting can be adjusted to three levels to get a good experience working both in dark rooms and in rooms with bright light. Since Asus G53′s keyboard is identical to that of G73, lighting LEDs are visible from certain angles. We cannot say that we have here an annoying problem, but other manufacturers have more aesthetic solution at a higher price that’s right. The speakers have a decent volume and an acceptable quality. They can sometimes replace a pair of headphones, but we think that the enthusiast players have higher claims. During games, the cooling does not become annoying noisy, but objects immediately behind Asus G53 will warm significantly. You’ll appreciate the fact that the keyboard and the restpad will heat just a bit. The screen’s angles of vision are slightly above average, and the ghosting effect is hardly noticeable. Action games can be played without problems.
All these being said, Asus G53J is an impressive gaming laptop and in some ways, even affordable– $2,462.00. Those who want one of the most powerful next-generation mobile graphics cards can buy the cheapest configuration. The laptop can be used for gaming and as a workstation, possibly with a monitor attached. As allways, we have here a short brief about Asus G53j pluses and minuses. Why Asus G53J is great? Well, because has top performance in games and not only, screen at 120 Hz and Vision 3D glasses in the package (for some configurations), quality construction, efficient cooling system, illuminated keyboard and a reasonable prices for a gaming laptop. Regarding its minuses, Asus G53J has no Nvidia Optimus on certain configurations and of course, again we might share the same opinion, we’d appreciate a higher optional resolution.
