The most popular sites use the .com extension, but there are also sites like Wikipedia, which have the .org extension. When you apply for a domain name, you have to know from the beginning how the site will look like and also what is the speciffic of the site.
You don’t have to select an .org extension, if you are an organziation. For example, Dell and Sony are big companies and they have their sites ended in the .com extension, not .org. Usually, .org is selected by organizations who don’t sell things, they rather inform their audience regarding certain issues. Just like Wikipedia informs us about a thing or another and doesn’t sell us anything, there are non-profit organizations that fight against cancer or other diseases, which use the .org extension.
If you have a site on which you write your own impressions about life and other stuff, it is better to go for a .com extension. If you plan to create a foundation, a charity organization, you should go for the .org extension. When the people are searching for your organization, they will see on Google or Bing or other search engine they use, the name of your organization and they will click on it. If they will enter many times on the site, the name of the site will remain in the browser, so the users will be able to enter your site simply by pressing the first letter of your domain name in their browser and by selecting your site. They might not even know the extension of your site. As long as they can read your articles, they are not interested in the .com issue.
But if they know the name of your site and they don’t know if you have a .com extension or another one, they will search for your site writing the .com extension. If you have the bad luck to use another extension and if the name of the site exists in the .com extension as well, the users might think that they have landed on your site. This situation can be overcame if you buy the .com domain even from the start. Remember if you have an .org domain, you should announce your visitors that your domain is the .org one and you have nothing to do with the other sites which have a similar name to your own, except the ending.
It is wise to talk to those who own such domain names and ask them to link to your site or to announce their own readers that your site is available at the .info address or the .net one or another one. You could meet bad people, that won’t do what you have asked them to do, but this should only make your stronger and it should be something from which you can learn. It is better to invent a name and then buy a .com domain, even if the name doesn’t exist. Make sure the name is easily to remember.
