New Apple iPod Nano 6 gen

In early September, Apple released the new generation of iPod players. If the Touch top model remained almost unchanged, the same thing can not be said about the other two. iPod Nano 6 gen and Shuffle  4 gen supported significantly changes. Below, we present the latest iteration of Nano, an MP3 player that was and apparently remains a reference model in the field.

Maybe it has already become a cliché, but iPod Nano 6 gen seems like an iPod Shuffle with screen. Immediately after launch, lots of images appeared on the Internet suggesting that the old generation of iPod Nano has been cut in half,  iPod Nano  is the top part and iPod Shuffle is the bottom part. Apparently, Apple wanted to show how far they can go with miniaturization and after having demonstrated on the old iPod Shuffle, now is Nano turn.  1.54”screen with 240×240 pixel resolution is the first multitouch type of Nano.

Apple minimalist construction could not be more evident than in the case of iPod Nano 6 gen. Only three buttons are on its either side , the jack and the headphone being on the opposite side. The clip on the back has a unique mechanism, being borrowed from previous versions of Shuffle. It is very solid and the Apple logo couldn’t miss.  In the package, you’ll find a classic pair of headphones and data cable, very well compacted. The package itself is very small and includes a mini guide.

iPod Nano 6 gen big button has the Sleep/ Wake function. The MP3 player can not be stopped effectively. When listening to music, the same button turns off the screen. It’s drive can be compared to the key lock button. Volume buttons are active even when the screen is off. Not the same can be said about the Shake to Shuffle feature. The screen must be running for the accelerometer to recognize the movement. iPod Nano 6 gen interface is similar to that of the iPhone and iPod Touch. Main menu buttons seem to be some applications, being displayed as four on the screen. Besides the music, settings, radio and podcasts, we discovered a Clock application with more features and a digital pedometer. The first of them seems to be the source of inspiration for a series of straps that secure the player on wrist. The second can be used with Nike  iPod Sport kit. By default, calories and the number of steps are counted, depending on the user’s weight.

For those familiar with the way of creating playlists and transferring files using iTunes, the new iPod Nano does not bring anything new. If you want to listen to songs similar to the current one, you can try Genius Mixes. FM tuner has been preserved, and Nano provides for it the Live Pause function. During the show or your favorite song, you can pause and continue listening within 15 minutes when it was stopped. VoiceOver function, introduced with the previous generation of Shuffle, is present in the current Nano. For better visibility, white / black shades from menu can be reversed. Regarding the audio quality, iPod Nano as usually doesn’t disappoint. The headphones don’t worth the player’s audio output, their quality is decent at best. Given the high price of the player, we think an investment of at least 30 euros for a better pair of headphones is quite appropriate.

Depending on how you set the player to your pants pocket or jacket lapel, the interface can be rotated in any direction with the already known gesture. Autonomy in real conditions, which included volume’s adjustment after 5-6 songs and display lighting  several times per hour, was located around 20 hours. This performance should be taken into account, given the fact that the battery qualities are about 105 mAh and 0, 39 Wh. If you are interested in the comparison,  iPod Nano 6 gen lacks audio recording, playback and camcorder. Perhaps Steve has decided to return to the concept “less is more.”11
